Who’s Behind the Wheel?
I’m Urkki – a maker at heart, traveling with five rescue dogs in an old Fiat Ducato towards Morocco. I live for colors, wool socks, and coffee – and still get lost regularly.

I’m a craftsperson through and through – the kind who just can’t sit still without making something with my hands. While others scroll their phones, I’m winding yarn into skeins, sewing something new, or mixing dye baths like a homemade witch’s cauldron.
My life has always been full of yarn, fabrics, buttons, knitting needles, pliers, and all kinds of tools I can’t even name properly. If a material feels interesting in my hands, I want to see what I can turn it into – whether it’s linen, silk, leather, wood, or plants gathered from the wild.
I’m a trained textile artisan and dyer journeyman, and I’ve also studied natural product design and web development – but in reality, the journey has taken me far beyond that.
I’ve sat at a loom from morning to night, dyed fabrics through the night, knitted until my wrists ached, and plunged my hands into clay just to see what would happen. Sometimes the result is perfect, sometimes a complete mystery – but always worth the lesson.
My passions aren’t tied to a single technique. Knitting, sewing, weaving, felting, crocheting, jewelry making, woodworking, painting, dyeing textiles, working with natural materials… the list goes on. Every new skill feels like a new journey – and I’m always ready to pack my imagination and set off.
These days I live in an old Fiat Ducato named Martta, together with my five rescue dogs. Martta is both my home and my traveling workshop – and sometimes an acrobatic obstacle course when I try to weave between yarn skeins, tools, and dogs without spilling my coffee or losing a ball of yarn to canine thieves.
Nature is our second home: forest trails, yard work, and foraging go hand in hand with my crafts – sometimes quite literally, when I find a piece of moss that’s the perfect color reference for a dyeing experiment or a tiny gnome door decoration.
My Colorful Roads is where all of this comes to life – the colors, the textures, the experiments, the failures, the triumphs, and the joy that comes from making things by hand as a way of life. And in the middle of it all, there’s always room for a cup of coffee, dog hair in my wool socks, and new stories from the road.
Our journey started in Finland and will take us through Eastern Europe all the way to Morocco – a country that stole my heart long ago. The route isn’t set in stone; stops and stays are decided by feeling. Sometimes we might end up wandering a narrow village street, other times waking up to a sunrise by the sea. One thing’s for sure: the trip will be colorful, furry, and full of stories.
