Road Trip to Morocco – With No Plan, Just Freedom
For many people, planning the trip is the best part. They spend weeks soaking it all in – reading travel blogs, watching YouTube videos, pinning locations to maps, comparing routes, mapping out stopovers and must-sees. Some couples even spend the whole winter planning their summer trip down to the last detail. Some even practice packing ahead of time.
But me?
Honestly – just the thought of all that makes me want to pull my hair out.
I don’t like planning. I don’t enjoy comparing routes. I can’t make schedules to save my life. And if I overthink it, the whole travel buzz vanishes into thin air. For me, the best kind of travel is when you just get going – no script, no structure. That’s what freedom feels like.
Then again…
I’ll admit, a little prep can save you from a few “oh no” moments. Sometimes it really stings to realize you’ve just whizzed past the perfect little café, beach cove, or flea market – and you’ll probably never pass that way again.
You don’t have to plan everything – and you shouldn’t. But it is nice to have a rough idea about things like:
-
good spots to stop for the night
-
where to get a decent coffee and a bun
-
secondhand treasures along the route
-
any yarn stores, craft shops or cute little boutiques worth a visit
-
and where to jump into the sea (preferably somewhere quiet and tourist-free)
So, a loose plan – something scribbled lightly in the back of your mind – could be just right.
Morocco is the destination – for now, at least
I lived there for almost two years, and some of my dogs are from there too. So what better place to return to and sniff out some familiar winds? Essaouira, my old home base, feels like a salty, sun-kissed hug – and the sea still pulls me in like a magnet.
The route will take us through Eastern Europe, but everything else? Still totally open – and that’s how I like it. The plan will probably change a hundred times before we even leave… and another hundred times along the way. If it were up to me to navigate, we’d still be stuck somewhere near Jämsä trying to find a turnoff that doesn’t exist.
But the road trip to Morocco will roll on, in its own rhythm – with detours, hills and hidden gems along the way.
